The fresh evidence
California’s trip to No. 23 SMU carries a homecoming inside the road game. Isaiah Crosby is from Fort Worth, attended Manor High and Trinity Valley Community College, and expects 20 to 30 relatives and friends in the stadium. The personal detail matters because Crosby also arrives as Cal’s leading tackler with 40, making his role central rather than ceremonial.
The Golden Bears are 3-4 and 2-2 in the ACC after a 41-7 loss to Wake Forest. One defender cannot repair that result, but Crosby’s season offers a clear standard for the first snap at SMU: arrive under control, finish in space and prevent routine completions from becoming explosive plays. His interception on Clemson’s opening drive also shows he can affect a possession before the tackle is required.
The matchup inside the matchup
SMU will try to make the secondary declare its intentions with motion and formation width. Crosby’s location can help Cal disguise the answer. From depth, he can close on the run while keeping the ball in front of him; closer to the box, he can threaten pressure and still carry a short route. The value is not surprise alone but the ability to reach the same sound fit from different starting points.
The challenge for a leading tackler is distinguishing productive involvement from excessive workload. Forty tackles demonstrate reliability, yet a safety making repeated stops several yards downfield can also signal that the front has been displaced. Cal needs its defensive line and linebackers to compress the play so Crosby arrives as the finisher rather than the emergency response.
What decides it
Eight Bears are from Texas, and running back Ashten Emory expects an even larger group of family and friends. That familiarity may make the trip feel less remote, but Cal is beginning three consecutive road games—SMU, NC State on October 31 and Virginia on November 14 around a bye. The process must travel: communication before the snap, clean leverage and tackling that ends the play immediately.
Crosby’s return gives the story a personal center without changing the football demand. Cal cannot allow the crowd, the previous loss or SMU’s ranking to speed up its decisions. If the Golden Bears make the Mustangs earn every yard and Crosby’s tackles occur on Cal’s terms, the leading tackler will have done more than compile another total. He will have helped the defense control the shape of the game.
