What changed Saturday
Arizona State’s 28-17 win over Kansas State belonged to Cardae Mack, whose four touchdowns turned a tied fourth quarter into a controlled finish. His two rushing scores in the final period supplied the separation, including an 11-yard run with 6:23 remaining. The Sun Devils improved to 4-3 by repeatedly putting their most decisive runner in a clear picture.
Kansas State made the game uncomfortable enough that Arizona State could not survive on variety alone. The useful development was the offense’s willingness to narrow rather than panic. When the possession demanded an answer, Mack received the ball with blockers working toward defined leverage, and the Sun Devils made the Wildcats prove they could stop the same central problem.
The decision underneath it
That does not mean the next opponent should see a predictable fourth-quarter offense. Mack’s production is most valuable when his presence can create false information. A motion toward the backfield can widen a linebacker, a decoy action can hold an edge defender and a quick throw can punish a safety who inserts too early to meet the run.
Arizona State also protected the margin by avoiding the one turnover or penalty that could have revived Kansas State late. Closing games is partly an offensive skill: stay ahead of the chains, make the defense use time and keep the playbook open enough that third down is not an emergency. Mack’s finishing runs emerged from that sequence rather than isolated improvisation.
What carries forward
The Sun Devils entered the afternoon needing stability after a difficult trip to Texas Tech. Beating Kansas State does not erase earlier inconsistency, but it identifies a trustworthy center for the next plan. Mack can carry a possession, absorb high-leverage touches and still influence the defense when the ball travels elsewhere.
Arizona State’s route forward should preserve that clarity. It can begin with Mack, vary the formation around him and make the opponent commit an extra defender before expanding the pass game. Four touchdowns are unlikely to repeat on command. The decision-making that put him in favorable space can, and that is the more important result from Tempe.
