The new quarterback entered a different game
Mikey Keene started the second half for Arizona State at Texas Tech and completed 25 of 34 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns. That gave the Sun Devils useful offensive evidence inside a 53–25 defeat on October 17.
It did not erase the conditions under which the evidence arrived. Texas Tech led 43–10 at halftime after gaining 404 yards before the break. A quarterback operating after that separation faces a game whose clock priorities and tolerance for risk may differ considerably from the opening kickoff. Production still counts; interpreting it requires the score to remain in view.
The first drive supplied a workable sequence
Arizona State opened the third quarter with an eleven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive lasting 5:26, finished by a two-yard pass to Reed Harris. Keene completed eleven of thirteen passes for 116 yards in the quarter. Derek Eusebio finished with seven catches for 89 yards, his first receptions of the season.
Those details make the performance more informative than a single late explosive play. The offense connected several assignments, kept another down available and finished a possession. That is a sequence the staff can evaluate snap by snap, while separating execution that would travel to a close game from opportunities influenced by a large deficit.
An audition is not an announced decision
Arizona State fell to 3–3 overall and 1–2 in the Big 12. Harris’ season receiving line reached 41 catches for 653 yards and eight touchdowns. Raiden Vines-Bright also supplied a 74-yard touchdown reception from Cutter Boley, evidence that the receiving threats were not confined to one quarterback’s stretch.
The available reporting does not establish a new permanent starter, and this performance should not be presented as an announcement the coaches have not made. It does establish that Keene supplied a functional passing response when given the second-half opportunity. Arizona State now needs to judge that response against the assignments and conditions of the next competitive possession, not simply promote an attractive completion percentage into a settled depth chart.
