The poll moved while Arizona rested
Arizona entered the AP poll at No. 25 on October 18 without playing the previous day. The Wildcats are 5–1 overall and 2–1 in the Big 12, and their next game against Iowa State brings an opportunity to give the new ranking something more substantial than a quiet week’s survival.
The useful preparation begins with what Arizona already showed in its 52–31 win at West Virginia: Antwan Roberts, Quincy Craig and Kedrick Reescano combined for 131 rushing yards, and each scored a touchdown. Noah Fifita’s passing was the headline attraction, but the backfield supplied several ways to turn an opening into points.
Different runners, one continuing threat
Craig scored from forty yards, Reescano from eight and Roberts from thirty. Fifita completed sixteen of twenty-three passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. Those passing gains made the field larger; the runners helped make that space expensive for the defense.
The three touchdowns do not establish equal workloads or identical assignments. They establish that changing the back did not necessarily remove the threat of a scoring run. That distinction matters when a defense starts directing more help toward the passing game. Arizona needs the runner on the field to use the available lane, rather than require the offense to summon one particular player before it can exploit it.
Ranking recognition does not finish the next possession
Iowa State visits October 24, with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. Arizona time on ESPN2. Arizona’s first 5–1 start since 2014 has supplied a foundation, not a completed conference race.
The offense becomes more durable when Fifita’s passing and the shared rushing work remain connected. A defense should not be allowed to exchange one problem for another it can dismiss. The next useful evidence will be a drive that keeps both possibilities available after Iowa State makes its first adjustment. The poll recognizes Arizona’s record; converting the space in front of the next runner is how the Wildcats can keep adding to it.
