The final distance kept expanding
Baylor’s last drive against TCU reached the eighteen-yard line. A holding and false-start sequence turned the situation into first-and-twenty-five at the 33; later the Bears faced third-and-twenty-nine at the 37. The 17–6 loss on October 17 ended with an offense being charged extra field it could not afford.
Baylor’s October 18 review identified three holding penalties and a false start on that possession. The drive had produced access to scoring territory. Its own mistakes then changed what the next successful play had to accomplish.
The running shortage made the tax heavier
The Bears gained 310 total yards but only 54 net rushing yards. DJ Lagway passed for 256 yards, completed 41.5 percent of his throws, was intercepted once and took four sacks. Gavin Freeman caught seven passes for 76 yards, while Louis Brown IV added five for 74.
The defense held TCU to 33 rushing yards and recorded four sacks and ten tackles for loss. That gave Baylor repeated opportunities to keep a low-scoring game available. An offense already struggling to generate reliable ground progress becomes still more vulnerable when penalties remove the shorter distance its passing game has earned.
Repair the assignment before asking for another rescue
Dave Aranda said the guards were swapped and assessed that TCU used lighter boxes in the second half. Those are the coach’s observations, not a claim that the final statistics independently establish every defensive alignment. The outcome still identifies a practical issue: Baylor did not consistently turn the available circumstances into sustained progress.
At 4–2 overall and 2–1 in the Big 12, with Kansas next on October 24, the Bears need the next completion to purchase useful territory instead of repay an avoidable debt. A holding penalty may prevent one immediate problem while creating a longer offensive one. The final drive made that exchange unmistakable. Baylor had already done the work to get close; its finishing sequence made close keep moving farther away.
