A result with a defensive backbone

BYU beat Iowa State 24–10 on October 9. The school’s October 12 announcement recognizes BYU’s defensive line as the Big 12 unit of the week after the Cyclones finished with 200 total yards. That performance gives the Cougars a specific accomplishment to carry into Saturday.

Notre Dame visits on October 17 for a 7:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff. College GameDay’s return to Provo confirms the scale of the occasion. Our emphasis is on how BYU can make that occasion a sequence of manageable football decisions rather than a demand to match every big play immediately.

The front can change the available game

A defensive front that limits the run can influence more than rushing totals. It can make the next down less flexible, reduce the offense’s choices and allow the rest of the defense to spend less time guessing. That is a valuable route into a game against an opponent capable of scoring quickly.

Our assessment is that BYU’s priority should be to make Notre Dame repeatedly earn the next situation. That does not require treating every first down as a crisis or chasing a tackle for loss at the cost of defensive structure. It requires enough reliable work up front that the Irish have to solve sustained possessions, with fewer opportunities supplied by missed assignments.

Let the offense support that advantage

The Cougars’ offense can help by producing possessions that leave the defense with time and territory to work. A series that fails to score is not automatically worthless, but an afternoon of very short possessions can erode the benefit of good defensive football. BYU should want the offense to participate in controlling the shape of the game.

The measures we would watch are rushing efficiency allowed, third-down distance faced by Notre Dame and whether BYU avoids handing the visitors short-field opportunities. Those are more useful early signs than the television spectacle or a single opening drive. The Iowa State win supplies evidence of a strong defensive assignment completed. The Notre Dame matchup asks whether the Cougars can preserve that structure against an opponent capable of changing the score with very little time or field required.

Correction — October 14

An earlier version included a rushing-yardage figure from BYU’s award announcement. We removed that figure because it conflicts with Iowa State’s official box score. The verified 200-yard total remains unchanged.
