Cincinnati quarterback J.C. French IV prepares to throw behind the Bearcats' protection

What changed Saturday

Cincinnati’s 37-24 win over No. 8 Texas Tech will be remembered as the program’s biggest upset in nearly 20 years, but the decisive possession began after the game threatened to turn. JC French IV threw two second-half interceptions, one returned 53 yards for a touchdown, before directing a nine-play, 80-yard answer and finding Larenzo Fenner for a 17-yard score.

French finished 19 of 30 for 172 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes. The numbers are unusual together: limited yardage, multiple scores and two dangerous mistakes. They describe a quarterback who did not dominate every down but recovered command exactly when Texas Tech had converted chaos into momentum.

The decision underneath it

The response drive should become Cincinnati’s model. The Bearcats did not demand a single explosive repair. They returned to manageable gains, protected the interior and let French reach the red zone with the full call sheet available. Fenner’s touchdown restored a 31-15 margin and forced Texas Tech to chase again rather than build on the interception.

Cole Tabb supplied the complementary finish with a career-high 173 rushing yards, including a 58-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. His production kept Texas Tech from turning every obvious down into a pressure opportunity. When the defense widened to challenge French’s targets, Tabb could attack the space the coverage had vacated.

What carries forward

Cincinnati improved to 5-2 and 2-2 in the Big 12 after a missed opportunity at West Virginia. The emotional difference between those weeks is large, yet the practical difference is smaller: finishing the response possession. Saturday, the Bearcats absorbed a turnover swing and immediately put the opponent back under scoreboard pressure.

No. 10 Utah visits on Halloween, bringing a defense that will study both French’s four touchdowns and his two interceptions. Cincinnati should not hide from either. The Bearcats can use the same balanced structure, make the quarterback’s first answer clear and keep Tabb involved enough that one mistake does not define the next series. The upset was built on recovery, not perfection.
