A 66-yard punt created the field position the Bearcats wanted. Their final passing-defense assignment still had to be completed.

The punt solved only the starting point

Cincinnati’s 66-yard punt left West Virginia backed up near its own goal line late on October 17. On third-and-nine from the two, Prince Strachan caught a contested pass for 41 yards. Two plays later he added another 39-yard reception.

A 35-yard field goal as time expired gave West Virginia a 45–42 win. The Bearcats had obtained nearly the best available starting field position for their defense. They still needed to prevent the passing escape that made that starting point disappear. The remaining coverage work was still decisive.

Stopping the run did not close the other route

West Virginia rushed 46 times for 134 yards, with Cam Cook gaining forty on fifteen carries. Michael Hawkins’ 464 passing yards and three touchdowns supplied the answer Cincinnati had not removed. Run-fit success was important without being sufficient.

The final catches do not prove a particular defender abandoned a specific assignment; that requires evidence beyond the box score. They do establish the challenge of defending a receiver who can win a contested opportunity even when the offense has little room to begin. Leverage, available help and finishing at the ball remain separate requirements after the front has limited the run.

The offense had already supplied enough chances

Cincinnati gained 622 yards. JC French IV completed 22 of 30 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, adding 52 rushing yards and a score. Cole Tabb produced 118 rushing yards, 54 receiving yards and three touchdowns; Malachi Henry’s two catches gained 128 yards.

At 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the Big 12, the Bearcats do not need to turn every defensive correction into a demand that the offense score even more. The late punt had created a viable route to protecting 42 points. The next step was completing the defense of the possession that followed. Field position can make an opponent’s job harder, but it cannot finish the coverage or contest the catch on the defense’s behalf.
