A connection that defined the afternoon
Houston beat Kansas State 35–16 on October 10. The Cougars’ official recap credits Conner Weigman and tight end Patrick Overmyer with four touchdown connections. Overmyer finished with eight catches for 83 yards, according to the same report.
Those figures show why the performance belongs in the conversation even without a huge receiving-yardage total. The catches mattered at the point where possessions became points. Houston found a target who could finish repeated opportunities rather than merely accumulate movement between the scoring areas.
The next defense has to choose
An opponent preparing for that connection must decide how much attention to move toward the tight end. Additional help can reduce one opportunity while changing another receiver’s matchup or the space available to the run game. The offense’s advantage lies in recognizing that tradeoff, not demanding the same target produce the same total again.
Our assessment is that Overmyer’s performance can therefore help Houston even in a game when he catches fewer touchdowns. If attention paid to him makes the correct answer elsewhere clearer, the threat has retained value. A quarterback and coordinator should want to make the defense’s adjustment expensive rather than turn last week’s result into a fixed script.
Keep the scorer inside a complete offense
The useful follow-up measures are the quality of Houston’s scoring-area possessions and the variety of answers available when the preferred matchup is covered. Fans should watch whether Weigman can move to another option without losing the timing of the play, and whether the run game remains credible when defenders concentrate on the pass.
A four-touchdown receiving performance is exceptional enough that treating it as a weekly requirement would make evaluation less useful. Houston’s goal should be to preserve the conditions that made it possible: functional protection, readable defensive choices and a receiver capable of finishing the chosen opportunity. Kansas State provided evidence that this particular connection can decide a game. The next test is whether the Cougars can use the attention it earns to make their entire scoring offense harder to solve.
