The fifth touchdown was not the final job
Conner Weigman threw five touchdown passes against Oklahoma State. Houston still needed something less spectacular to finish its 35–32 victory on October 17: another possession that would not give the Cowboys a final answer.
Oklahoma State’s last touchdown came with 4:54 remaining. Houston kept the ball, using third-down catches by Amare Thomas and Trent Walker and an eight-yard Weigman run to finish the game with the visitors out of timeouts. The quarterback who had supplied the scoring also helped remove the need to score again.
Different targets made different demands
Weigman completed 24 of 33 passes for 343 yards with one interception. Thomas had seven catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns; Walker caught seven for 104 and a score. Koby Young contributed 68 yards on three receptions, including the 48-yard touchdown with 9:48 left that extended Houston’s lead to 35–25.
Those receiving lines describe more than a productive favorite target. Houston had multiple players capable of changing the field, which made it harder to solve the passing game by concentrating on one connection. Weigman also gained 52 net rushing yards, including a 44-yard scramble on third-and-long. Coverage that survived the initial routes still had to finish the play.
First downs became a defensive resource
Houston converted seven of thirteen third downs and all three fourth-down attempts. It gained 505 yards, but Oklahoma State gained 499. The Cowboys’ 365 passing yards from Drew Mestemaker made another late possession an uncomfortable possibility rather than an empty hypothetical.
That is why the closing drive deserves space beside the touchdown highlights. Converting a late third down does not merely improve an offensive efficiency figure; it prevents an opponent from using its own demonstrated strength. At 6–1 overall and 3–1 in the Big 12, Houston heads to Utah with a win built on repeated answers. The final one was to make the game stop asking questions of its defense.
