Iowa State cannot make every Arizona drive reach the goal-line test

The Cyclones produced close-range stops at BYU. Long passing gains showed why that cannot be their only reliable exit.

The close-range stops were genuine

Iowa State stopped BYU on three fourth-down attempts in its 24–10 loss on October 9, including stands at the Cyclones’ five and two. Those defensive finishes prevented additional points. They did not prevent the Cougars from scoring without needing another long goal-line examination.

Bear Bachmeier passed for 329 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 109. His scoring passes covered 27 yards to Kyler Kasper and 75 to Legend Glasker; Roger Saleapaga II added a 63-yard reception. The defense’s strongest endings had been bypassed by gains that changed the field much earlier.

Arizona can ask the same distance question differently

After both teams rested October 17, Iowa State visits Arizona on October 24. Noah Fifita completed sixteen of twenty-three passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns in Arizona’s previous win over West Virginia. Isaiah Mizell caught six for 183 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard touchdown.

That does not establish which receivers will be available for the coming game or predict another identical stat line. It establishes the kind of threat the Cyclones need to prepare to defend: a completion that becomes much more than the distance to the catch point. Keeping coverage connected and finishing the tackle can matter before a red-zone stand is even possible.

Make the offense earn the smaller gains

Iowa State recorded no sacks at BYU. Sullivan Schlimgen led with ten tackles, and Eddie Lemos added seven. The Cyclones are 3–3 overall and 1–2 in the Big 12; Arizona is 5–1 and 2–1. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Central on ESPN2.

The practical defensive objective is reducing how often a single successful throw removes several future opportunities to get a stop. Goal-line resilience remains useful, but relying on it means repeatedly allowing the opponent to choose how the drive reaches its ending. Iowa State needs the earlier parts of the field to impose a cost as well. A long series of smaller gains gives the defense more separate chances to finish the possession than one reception that carries nearly the whole distance.
