Iowa State’s offensive repair has to begin earlier

Aiden Flora found yards after halftime at BYU. The bye-week priority is giving the Cyclones a workable offense before the game tilts.

Iowa State lost 24–10 at BYU on Friday, October 9, falling to 3–3 overall and 1–2 in Big 12 play. Its official recap lists Jaylen Raynor with 98 passing yards and a touchdown and Aiden Flora with 86 rushing yards. Flora had only 11 rushing yards before halftime. The Cyclones scored their touchdown after a muffed BYU punt created an opportunity early in the fourth quarter.

BYU’s October 12 defensive-line announcement confirms Iowa State gained just 49 total yards in the first half and 200 for the game. The Cyclones have an open week before visiting Arizona on October 24.

A late rushing gain cannot repair an early empty half

Iowa State needs to study the opening offensive conditions, rather than treat Flora’s final total as proof that the ground game was available all night. The difference between his first-half and full-game production makes that distinction clear. A back can find yards later while the team is already operating under a less favorable score.

The bye should offer time to identify an opening package that creates usable downs without depending on a perfect individual effort. That might involve a different alignment, a quick passing answer or a run designed to test a particular defender’s responsibility. These are options for the staff to consider, not changes this newspaper claims have been made. The essential objective is to prevent the defense from becoming comfortable with what Iowa State must do next.

Find offense that does not require a gift

The touchdown following the muffed punt matters because Iowa State converted an opportunity. It also emphasizes the need to build possessions independently. A team cannot schedule the opponent’s special-teams error, and waiting for one leaves too much of the game outside its control. Raynor needs reliable targets that can create progress before the drive reaches an obvious passing situation.

Against Arizona, we would watch the Cyclones’ first three offensive possessions and the balance of responsibilities within them. Is Flora being asked to rescue a poor down-and-distance situation, or is the offense giving him space through its other threats? Can Raynor move the chains without needing a low-percentage throw? The BYU result supplies a clear diagnosis at the level of timing: too little offense arrived early. A meaningful response would make Iowa State’s productive plays available while the score still allows it to choose its approach.
