The rushing total still needed a receiving bridge
Joe Jackson rushed for 159 yards and Avery Johnson for 132 in Kansas State’s 35–24 win at Kansas on October 17. Jaron Tibbs’ five catches for 67 yards supplied a different part of the same offensive response.
On third-and-eight, Tibbs caught an eleven-yard pass to help set up Jackson’s eight-yard touchdown run. He added a 29-yard catch on a later drive and a nine-yard crossing-route touchdown with 8:28 remaining. Those plays mattered not because they competed with the ground game, but because they kept the defense from reducing every important down to it.
A conversion can be the explosive run’s partner
The Wildcats gained 568 yards, including 359 rushing. Johnson completed fourteen of twenty-four passes for 209 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Jackson’s 64-yard run immediately after Logan Bartley’s end-zone interception changed the field again.
A defense that must respect the run can still win a passing down if the offense has no reliable intermediate answer. Tibbs supplied the distance needed on third-and-eight rather than requiring another long rush to rescue the possession. The later scoring catch used a different amount of field but served the same purpose: make the whole offensive menu remain relevant at the moment the defense most wants to narrow it.
The next opponent must defend the connection
Kansas State improved to 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the Big 12, extending its winning streak against Kansas to eighteen games. Luis Rodriguez made four field goals, adding another way for possessions to produce points.
The Wildcats visit Arizona State on October 24, with kickoff set for 2:45 p.m. Central on ESPN2. The useful continuation is not demanding another 359-yard rushing total. It is keeping the passing connection available when the next defense changes the running lanes. Tibbs’ work helped Saturday’s offense remain a sequence of compatible answers, rather than a collection of isolated long gains that still needed someone else to finish the drive.
