Twelve attempts, twelve useful finishes
Sam Keltner has made all twelve of his field-goal attempts and all nineteen extra points this season. Oklahoma State’s kicker earned AP midseason first-team All-America recognition October 15. At 11 points per game, he ranks seventh nationally, according to the school’s announcement.
His longest field goal is 47 yards. That detail belongs beside the perfect percentage. Twelve successful attempts establish reliability under the conditions actually encountered. They do not establish that the Cowboys can ask him to solve any distance the offense leaves behind.
The offense still has to reach the decision
Houston allows 74 rushing yards per game, fourth nationally, while Oklahoma State averages 199 on the ground. That matchup could make the final yards of a drive particularly consequential. A stopped run or penalty near scoring range changes both the next offensive call and the kick that might follow.
Keltner’s accuracy gives Oklahoma State a reason to trust a well-prepared field-goal opportunity. It should not encourage the offense to treat the edge of his established range as the destination of every series. Another useful gain can make the attempt more favorable; a negative play can remove it. The protection, snap and hold must also repeat their work. The kicker’s percentage records the finish of that operation, not the absence of demands on everyone preceding him.
Trust the evidence without stretching it
No. 18 Oklahoma State, 4–1 overall and 2–0 in the Big 12, visits No. 20 Houston on October 17 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on FOX. The Cowboys bring a specialist who has completed every scoring opportunity of his season so far. The game will still require them to create appropriate opportunities.
The important choice is not a blanket preference for kicking or going for a first down. It is recognizing what the distance, time and matchup actually offer. Keltner’s perfect start makes some endings more dependable. Oklahoma State should protect that advantage by keeping the rest of the possession purposeful, rather than mistaking twelve makes for proof that the offense has no more distance left to solve.
