The sacks changed the following down
Koron Hayward sacked Baylor’s quarterback for nine yards in the first half, leaving third-and-twenty. Another eight-yard loss helped create third-and-twenty-seven. The possessions ended with a punt and a missed 47-yard field goal.
TCU’s 17–6 win on October 17 included Hayward’s three sacks for 23 yards and a forced fumble. The most useful part of that line is not just the accumulated damage. It is how the defense kept Baylor from repairing it before the possession ended.
Six points required continued coverage
The Horned Frogs held a Big 12 opponent without a touchdown for the first time since the 2017 Texas Tech game. DJ Lagway completed twenty-two of fifty-three passes, and Baylor did not produce a rushing gain of fifteen yards.
A sack can invite an offense to accept a modest completion and punt, or to attempt a more difficult downfield recovery. Either response still demands defensive discipline. TCU had to tackle the short throw and remain positioned for the longer one rather than treat the negative play as a completed series. Hayward’s pressure and the coverage behind it supplied related contributions, not competing explanations for the result.
The second half kept closing the door
Baylor’s second-half possessions produced an interception, three punts and two turnovers on downs. Jamel Johnson made the interception, and the Bears’ last two opportunities ended without a conversion. Hayward added his third sack early in the fourth quarter.
TCU announced his Big 12 defensive player of the week honor on October 19. It was the program’s first three-sack game by one player since 2022, and Hayward also collected a career-high five solo tackles.
At 3–3 overall and 1–2 in the Big 12, the Horned Frogs host West Virginia next. Their defensive model from Baylor is clear enough to evaluate again: create a difficult distance, then keep the opponent from finding its inexpensive escape. Three sacks are exceptional individual production. Six points allowed required the defense to make those sacks remain exceptional problems for the offense facing them.
