Recognition arrived at four different jobs
Texas Tech’s October 20 midseason honors included offensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr., linebackers Austin Romaine and Ben Roberts, and punter Will Karoll. The selectors differed, but the distribution is more useful than any single list. It says the 6–0 Red Raiders have players influencing protection, tackling and the starting point of the next possession.
That matters after a 53–25 win over Arizona State produced obvious offensive headlines. A team ranked No. 8 does not stay unbeaten only by repeating its best scoring quarter. It also survives the drive that stalls. Karoll can lengthen the field, while Romaine and Roberts can prevent a poor possession from turning immediately into points.
Cincinnati makes territory practical
Texas Tech visits Cincinnati at noon Eastern for its first game at Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats are 4–2 and 1–2 in the Big 12, while Tech carries a four-game road winning streak. A compact road setting can magnify special-teams decisions, communication at the line and the first missed tackle after a punt.
Holmes’ recognition belongs in that equation. Protection keeps a drive from becoming a punting situation too quickly, but it also allows the Red Raiders to choose where the ball goes rather than merely escaping pressure. The two linebackers then provide the opposite task: make Cincinnati spend another snap for each section of field it crosses.
Depth reduces the demand for perfection
Ben Roberts already supplied a touchdown return and a fourth-down stop in the Arizona State win. Cincinnati will know that tape. Texas Tech’s response should not be to demand another spectacular play from him. It should trust the broader group recognized Tuesday to produce smaller advantages that make a takeaway or short-field score less necessary.
Midseason awards are snapshots, not protection against an upset. Their real value is identifying why Texas Tech can win more than one kind of game. If the offense starts slowly, Karoll and the defense can hold the margin. If the defense needs rest, Holmes and the offense can extend a possession. That range travels better than ranking alone.
