Texas Tech keeps winning the second half. The first still matters.

A plus-72 margin after halftime has powered the unbeaten start. Arizona State gives the Red Raiders a chance to make the recovery less necessary.

The difference between two beginnings

Texas Tech has outscored opponents by 72 points in second halves this season. Its first-quarter advantage is seven. Both numbers belong to the same unbeaten team, but they describe very different parts of its afternoons.

The Red Raiders’ October 12 game notes place that second-half margin third nationally. Four of their five wins were one-possession games at halftime; three of those became double-digit victories. The record supports a team capable of responding and separating. It also leaves an opening question for Saturday: how much stronger would Texas Tech become if it did not need the response so often?

Do not confuse patience with a slow start

A good second half can reflect useful adjustments, deeper execution, or an opponent becoming less able to answer the same demands. The score differential by itself cannot assign a precise share to each cause. What it can establish is that Texas Tech has repeatedly played its most decisive football after the interval.

The offense should keep that patience without treating early possessions as disposable. A clean opening series can force the opponent to adjust sooner. A failed first-quarter drive can still supply information, but it also gives away an opportunity to make the eventual second-half workload smaller. The goal is not a frantic opening that abandons the plan whenever the first call gains little. It is a more complete use of the time already available.

Make the lead part of the adjustment

No. 10 Texas Tech is 5–0 overall and 2–0 in the Big 12 before hosting Arizona State, 3–2 and 1–1, on October 17. Kickoff in Lubbock is 2:30 p.m. Central on FOX. The Red Raiders have already shown they can turn a close game into separation. Their next examination is whether they can carry a more favorable game into that stretch.

Watch the first several third downs and the response to the opponent’s initial defensive approach. An early answer that produces points makes later flexibility more valuable, not less. Texas Tech should welcome the strength reflected in its second-half numbers. The best continuation would keep that finishing power while giving it less recovery work to perform. A team does not have to choose between being patient and beginning well.
