The tackle total is only part of the assignment
Zach Lutmer has started all six games at free safety for Iowa, recording 34 tackles and four pass breakups. He made twelve tackles at Michigan and eleven against Ohio State. On October 15, he became one of sixteen quarterfinalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy.
Those are visible markers of a productive first half. Phil Parker’s October 13 news conference identified another contribution that is harder to count: Lutmer helping Anthony Hawkins and Xavier Styles communicate as they learn Iowa’s defensive system. A safety’s value can appear before anyone has an opportunity to record a tackle.
Recognition has to travel to the next defender
Parker specifically discussed wanting Styles to become more vocal and confident. That is not merely a request for noise. A defender can correctly recognize an offensive change and still leave a teammate responding to the earlier picture if the recognition never becomes shared information.
Lutmer’s experience matters because the secondary’s jobs connect. Moving one defender toward a threat changes which spaces another player must protect. A clear, timely call gives the group a chance to make the adjustment together. An uncertain or late response can leave two defenders solving different versions of the same play. The veteran’s assignment is therefore larger than correcting his own alignment and hoping everyone else arrives at the same conclusion.
Use the bye before the offense forces the answer
Iowa is 5–1 overall and 2–1 in the Big Ten, with an open date October 17 before visiting Minnesota on October 24. The pause gives the secondary time to rehearse the changing looks that are harder to resolve at full game speed.
The next measure of improvement will not necessarily be Lutmer making another double-digit tackle total. A defense that reaches the right positions early may prevent the kind of play that demands a safety’s tackle downfield. Watch whether a motion or formation change produces one coordinated response instead of several individual corrections. Lutmer’s award recognition summarizes what he has contributed. His next useful contribution may be a call that lets someone else finish the play exactly where Iowa intended.
