Maryland’s takeaways need a better offensive return

The Terps created chances at Ohio State. Homecoming against Rutgers asks the passing game to do more with them.

Maryland lost 45–16 at Ohio State on October 10. The Terps’ official recap records a strip-sack recovered by Messiah Delhomme and a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown by Daniel Wingate. Malik Washington finished with 64 passing yards and scored on a five-yard run during an 11-play, 75-yard first-half drive.

Ohio State’s official box score corroborates the result and scoring sequence. Maryland returns home to face Rutgers on October 17. The defensive takeaways created identifiable opportunities, while the low passing total shows how difficult it was for the offense to sustain progress through the air.

Restore a usable passing rhythm

Maryland should start with the timing of its ordinary completions. A quarterback can benefit from a clear early target that arrives before pressure dictates the throw. The receivers and protection have to support that timing together. If the intended route is late or the quarterback cannot trust the pocket long enough to use it, a short passing concept can still become a difficult play.

That does not mean making every throw shorter. An offense that never threatens the defense beyond the immediate area gives defenders permission to crowd those routes. Maryland needs complementary patterns that make the coverage respect more than one depth. The useful measure is whether Washington has a sound decision available, rather than whether the play looks conservative or aggressive on paper. A correct read must also lead to enough yardage to keep the possession alive.

Make the defense’s work visible in the next drive

The 75-yard touchdown possession offers a real example of Maryland assembling an effective series. The task is to understand which choices within it can be repeated against Rutgers, whose preparation and matchups will differ. A single successful drive is evidence of capability, not assurance that the next game will provide the same circumstances.

We would watch the offense after a defensive takeaway or stop. Does it use the changed field position to create another scoring chance, or does the advantage quickly return to the opponent? Wingate’s touchdown converted his own interception directly into points; most defensive successes still require offensive help. Maryland’s homecoming response should be judged by that connection. Giving Washington cleaner choices and producing a sustained passing rhythm would let the defense’s disruptive plays become a foundation for the game instead of its most isolated positive moments.
