Experience in the middle
Trent Fraley has started 35 consecutive games at center, including all six of Michigan State’s games this season. The streak belongs to more than one uniform. It gives the Spartans a player accustomed to making the middle of an offense work, even when the people and circumstances around him change.
Michigan State announced October 15 that Fraley had joined the Rimington Trophy watch list. The graduate transfer won the FCS version of the award at North Dakota State in 2025. Through 396 snaps this season, the school reports an 80.2 Pro Football Focus grade, the highest among its offensive players. The grade is an evaluation, not a guarantee of the next matchup. The sustained workload is evidence of a role he has repeatedly handled.
A productive offense still needs agreement
Against Illinois, Alessio Milivojevic completed 22 of 26 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Jaziun Patterson rushed seventeen times for 93 yards and three touchdowns, then added a receiving score. Michigan State still lost 38–37 in overtime. There were useful offensive pieces inside a difficult result.
Fraley’s position connects those pieces. The center has to deliver an accurate exchange while participating in the protection and run-blocking operation immediately afterward. When defenders move, a shared response matters more than five isolated victories. His experience is valuable if it helps the entire front reach the same conclusion before the snap, especially when a possession becomes urgent.
Northwestern gets a current test
Michigan State is 2–4 overall and 0–3 in the Big Ten before hosting No. 25 Northwestern on October 17. The Wildcats arrive 4–1 and 1–1. Kickoff is noon Eastern on Peacock. The Spartans cannot carry over points from the Illinois performance, but they can carry over the parts of their operation that produced them.
Watch how the offense handles the first late defensive movement or negative play. A veteran center cannot solve every problem. He can help keep one problem from turning into several conflicting reactions. Fraley’s watch-list recognition is a midseason acknowledgment. Michigan State needs his steadiness to remain visible in the next series, not just the announcement.
