Michigan State earned the short field, but not the winning points

Stopping Northwestern’s fake punt opened a late door. A blocked field goal and one final drive closed it the other way.

The special-teams opportunity was already there

Michigan State stopped Northwestern’s fake punt on fourth-and-eight and took over at the Wildcats’ 28 with 3:29 remaining on October 17. In a tied game, the Spartans had obtained the field position that can make a late possession decisive.

Five carries advanced the ball thirteen yards. Liam Boyd’s 33-yard field-goal attempt was blocked with a minute left. Northwestern then moved into range for a 34-yard winning kick with two seconds remaining, leaving Michigan State with a 24–21 defeat and a clear distinction between earning an opportunity and completing it.

One kick did not contain the whole game

The Spartans had led 21–13 with 11:48 remaining before Northwestern’s touchdown and two-point conversion tied it at 7:24. Alessio Milivojevic passed for 216 yards and two touchdowns, completing nineteen of thirty attempts. McCray contributed a 53-yard touchdown reception and a 41-yard punt return.

Michigan State had also blocked a Northwestern field-goal attempt before halftime, through Eli Coenen. Special teams therefore created advantages as well as suffering the late setback. Describing the unit only through its last unsuccessful kick would miss how the game reached a position in which that kick could have won it.

A favorable start still needs a complete finish

Dion Crawford made fourteen tackles, and Stodghill added eleven. Yet the defense still faced one last assignment after the blocked kick, and Aidan Chiles’ three completions for fifty yards plus a fourteen-yard run moved Northwestern toward the winning attempt.

Michigan State is 2–5 overall and 0–4 in the Big Ten, with No. 9 UCLA next on October 24. The actionable lesson is not merely that a field goal must be made. A late scoring possession includes the preceding gains, protection, snap, hold and kick, followed by defense if it fails. Stopping the fake punt solved the field-position problem. The Spartans needed the rest of the operation to turn that solution into points before the opponent could use the remaining minute.
