Michigan State’s quarterback changes could not repair third down

Two passers shared the loss at UCLA, but 2-of-11 conversions reveal a problem larger than the depth chart.

What changed Saturday

Michigan State used two quarterbacks in a 28-10 loss at No. 9 UCLA and neither could change the down-and-distance problem. Leo Hannan completed 9 of 15 passes for 67 yards with an interception; Kayd Coffman went 4 of 10 for 42 yards, a touchdown and a pick. The Spartans converted only 2 of 11 third downs.

The offense finished with 156 yards, including 47 rushing yards on 29 attempts. That ground total repeatedly delivered the quarterbacks into obvious passing situations where UCLA could rush without respecting the run. Changing the player behind center altered the arm but not the structure surrounding the throw.

The decision underneath it

Michigan State should evaluate first down before choosing its next quarterback. A completion of five yards, a perimeter run that forces the edge wider or a screen against pressure can create third-and-manageable. The play caller then gains access to the entire formation instead of asking a quarterback to wait for a route beyond the sticks.

Kenneth Williams’ 14-yard touchdown run gave the Spartans an early lead, proof that the offense can capitalize when the picture is defined. The challenge is sustaining that clarity after an opponent adjusts. UCLA scored 28 unanswered points and forced Michigan State to operate from a margin that made the passing plan even more predictable.

What carries forward

At 2-6 and 0-5 in the Big Ten, the Spartans cannot treat the quarterback decision as a complete reset. Hannan and Coffman both need a credible run, protected first read and checkdown that keeps the possession alive. Without those elements, the next starter will inherit the same third-and-long problem.

The open week before Michigan provides time to choose a quarterback, but the more important choice is what that player will be asked to solve. Michigan State must win an ordinary first down, create a third down with multiple available calls and let the quarterback deliver on rhythm. Two of 11 is the statistic that needs to change before the name on the lineup card matters.
