The quarterback became another rushing destination
Tommy Carr took over Michigan’s offense in the second half against Penn State on October 17. He completed five of seven passes for 47 yards and rushed for 36, including a twelve-yard touchdown. Michigan turned a 3–0 halftime deficit into a 21–18 win.
A twenty-two-yard Carr keeper also helped set up Jordan Marshall’s one-yard touchdown run. The quarterback’s value was not confined to the score beside his own name. His running supplied another way to continue a possession and another player the defense had to account for before the ball reached a back.
The change worked inside a larger ground response
Michigan rushed for 174 of its 211 yards after halftime and gained 221 second-half yards at 7.4 per play. Savion Hiter finished with 78 yards on eleven carries, including a career-long 41-yard gain. Bryson Kuzdzal scored from 43 yards for his first touchdown of the season.
Those contributions prevent the afternoon from becoming an oversimplified quarterback-replacement story. Carr changed the available choices, but the other runners and their blockers still had to make those choices productive. A defense that must respect the keeper can face a harder decision on the handoff; that relationship only helps if both parts remain credible.
The defense supplied better starting circumstances
Rod Moore Jr.’s interception preceded Michigan’s first touchdown. Chris Bracy added an interception and a strip-sack recovered by Enow Etta, helping create the other scoring opportunities. All three Penn State turnovers came after halftime.
Michigan is 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the Big Ten, with No. 6 Indiana visiting October 24. Saturday does not, by itself, announce a permanent quarterback decision. It does provide concrete evidence of what Carr added and how much surrounding work helped it matter. The next evaluation should preserve that context: a useful running threat at quarterback, a backfield producing beyond him, and a defense that changed the distances the offense needed to travel.
