A familiar player took a different central job
Greg Johnson started Minnesota’s first three games at left guard before shifting to center, a position he had also played in 2024. His career experience includes all five offensive-line positions and starts at left tackle, left guard, center and right tackle.
That background matters differently from simply retaining a recognizable name in the lineup. The center begins each play with the snap and works inside the protection’s most crowded area. Moving there changes how a player’s timing and communication connect to the quarterback and the blockers on either side.
The recognition comes with a defined measurement
Johnson earned AP midseason second-team All-America recognition and joined the Rimington Trophy midseason watch list on October 15. Minnesota’s announcement cited PFF crediting him with one pressure in 202 opportunities.
Those are useful, specific pieces of evidence. A grading service’s individual pressure attribution is not the team’s sack total, and a midseason honor is not proof that every assignment was correct. It does identify a player whose work has held up well under one stated evaluation while his responsibilities have changed. The stronger analysis preserves the measurement’s boundaries instead of enlarging it into a claim it cannot support.
Iowa will change the picture in front of him
Minnesota was idle October 17 and stands 4–2 overall and 2–1 in the Big Ten. No. 15 Iowa visits October 24, bringing the next live test of whether the protection can remain connected when the defensive picture changes.
Johnson’s versatility can help because he understands several neighboring jobs, not because it allows him to perform all five at once. A center still needs the guards and tackles to answer the same pressure with compatible decisions. The next useful evidence will be a clean exchange and a stable place for Drake Lindsey to make his read, particularly after Iowa moves a defender or changes its count. Minnesota has an experienced starting point. It must keep making that experience function as a shared response.
