The fresh evidence

Ohio State’s open week begins at 6-1 after a 19-15 win at Indiana, and Jaylen McClain has become the defender who connects its different plans. The safety has 32 tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups. More revealingly, he created a turnover in each of the Buckeyes’ three games against ranked opponents.

McClain intercepted passes at Texas and Iowa, then forced a fumble at Indiana while adding four tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss. That range allows Ohio State to show the same alignment and produce different answers. He can close from depth, cover a receiver or arrive as pressure without forcing the rest of the secondary into an obvious rotation.

The matchup inside the matchup

That flexibility is valuable before the October 31 trip to USC, the programs’ first meeting as Big Ten members. The Trojans can spread the field with multiple productive receivers and use motion to expose a defense that has already declared its matchup. McClain lets Ohio State delay that declaration until after the quarterback has begun the cadence.

A versatile safety does not eliminate the need for sound front play. If McClain is constantly making tackles because a linebacker has been displaced, the defense loses its disguise and invites USC to attack the vacated area. His best work should be selective—one pressure that changes protection, one bracket that removes a target, one fit that closes a developing run.

What decides it

Jeremiah Smith’s 52 catches for 984 yards and 12 touchdowns give Ohio State an offensive answer capable of changing any possession. The bye should connect the units: a defense that creates one extra takeaway gives Smith and the offense a short field, while an offense that holds the ball lets McClain remain a changeup rather than a permanent rescue plan.

The Buckeyes do not need to decide this week whether McClain is primarily a coverage safety, box defender or blitzer. His value is that USC must prepare for all three. Ohio State can build the game plan around that uncertainty, then use the role that best matches each down. McClain’s production shows the versatility is already more than theoretical.
