The evidence
Ohio State did not play Saturday, yet it moved to No. 2 in the new AP poll as BYU lost at UCF. The promotion changes the label, not the assignment. The Buckeyes return from their only open week with an October 31 trip to USC, their first visit to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since 2008 and a game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC.
USC’s 24-7 loss at Wisconsin supplied fresh evidence for Ohio State’s preparation. The Trojans allowed three long Wisconsin touchdown drives after halftime and failed to create enough offense to make the Badgers abandon a patient plan. Ohio State can borrow the discipline without assuming the matchup will reproduce itself in a different stadium and time zone.
What the film is asking
The useful offensive question is how long the Buckeyes can stay balanced. Julian Sayin and the passing game will see chances, but the road environment rewards an offense that can make the first five yards predictable before chasing the next 25. A credible run also slows the edge pressure that USC will need after being controlled in Madison.
Defensively, Ohio State should make USC prove it can sustain possession. Wisconsin limited the Trojans to seven points by preventing the quick strike from resetting the contest. The Buckeyes can play with numbers behind the ball, rally to underneath completions and unleash pressure only after the down and distance remove the full playbook.
What comes next
The bye matters most in the details that polling cannot measure: protection communication, tackling angles and the substitution plan for a long road night. Ohio State has been idle since a 19-15 win at Indiana on October 17. That narrow result already warned that ranking and efficiency can separate quickly when one side of the ball loses rhythm.
Moving to No. 2 gives the USC game a larger frame, but the correct plan is smaller. Win first down, keep the quarterback out of rescue mode and force the Trojans to complete a long drive. If Ohio State repeats those ordinary decisions, the new ranking will look like a consequence of the football rather than a burden carried into the Coliseum.
