The recoveries began in the defensive backfield
Jay Timmons forced a Davion Chandler fumble, and Earl Little Jr. recovered it. Jaylen McClain later produced a strip-sack of Josh Hoover, with TJ Alford securing the loose ball. Ohio State’s 19–15 win at Indiana on October 17 included no Buckeye interception, but it still included two decisive changes of possession.
Those plays came from a defense that allowed 296 passing yards. Calling the afternoon complete passing-game dominance would miss the evidence. Calling it ineffective because of those yards would miss the two possessions the secondary helped take away.
Pressure did not have to become a large sack total
Ohio State finished with one sack, two tackles for loss and six pass breakups. Indiana gained 73 rushing yards on 29 carries. Little added eight tackles and a pass breakup, contributing ordinary defensive work alongside his recovery.
The distinction between disruption and accumulation matters here. A single strip-sack changes ownership of the ball, while a hurry or a breakup can force another down without entering the sack column. The defense still had to tackle through a passing game that produced substantial gains. Its success was in creating enough definitive endings to make a four-point margin stand.
The quarterback news is a separate developing story
Ryan Day said Julian Sayin would probably miss several weeks after leaving with an injury; WHIO independently reported that assessment. The word probably matters. The reporting does not establish a diagnosis here, and the next availability update remains necessary. Luke Fahey finished the game.
Ohio State enters its bye at 6–1 overall and 4–0 in the Big Ten, with USC next on October 31. A changed quarterback situation may increase the value of every possession, but the defense’s assignment does not begin with forecasting the replacement’s production. It begins with preserving its own run fits, finishing coverage and securing the ball when disruption makes it available. Saturday’s two recoveries showed how a secondary can contribute beyond the passes that reach it.
