Nine points did not need the fourth-quarter breakthrough
Gage Hurych made field goals from 36, 36 and 37 yards against Nebraska. Oregon won 17–14 on October 17 after an offense that had gained only 91 yards through three quarters finally produced 151 in the fourth.
The kicker’s nine points kept that late improvement connected to a possible victory. Without treating a field goal as equivalent to a touchdown, the Ducks could still earn a return from possessions that fell short of the end zone. Their offense did not have to begin its recovery from nothing.
The season’s accuracy became a game’s foundation
Oregon announced Hurych as the Big Ten special teams player of the week on October 19. He is nine for nine on field goals and nineteen for nineteen on extra points this season. The honor was the Ducks’ first Big Ten weekly award of 2026.
Perfect accuracy is a record of attempts already completed, not a guarantee about the next kick. The practical benefit is that Oregon has repeatedly finished the kicking operation when the offense has needed it. Snap, hold, protection and strike all have to remain reliable; shortening the attempt does not remove those responsibilities. Hurych’s Nebraska work made the routine-range option worth preserving rather than a source of additional uncertainty.
The late drive still had its own job
Dylan Raiola completed eleven of eighteen passes for 59 yards and a touchdown in relief. Oregon’s final scoring drive took twenty plays to cover 82 yards, ending with a four-yard touchdown pass to Jamari Johnson with 28 seconds remaining.
That is a very different form of progress from a quick explosive score. It required the offense to keep earning another snap while the existing points remained useful. The defense helped hold the game within reach by allowing Nebraska only 242 yards.
At 4–2 overall and 2–1 in the Big Ten, Oregon heads toward Illinois with evidence of complementary scoring rather than an excuse for the slow start. The kick cannot replace the touchdown the game eventually demands. Against Nebraska, it helped ensure that touchdown could still be enough.
