Purdue’s recovery is moving in both directions on the ground

Fame Ijeboi’s big night was only half the story: Minnesota gained 27 rushing yards and no rushing first downs.

Purdue beat Minnesota 41–13 on October 10. Fame Ijeboi carried 31 times for 195 yards and three touchdowns, while Ryan Browne added 81 rushing yards and a rushing score. Purdue ran for 305 yards; Minnesota finished with 27 and no rushing first downs.

The Boilermakers are 3–3 overall and 2–1 in the Big Ten after consecutive conference wins, their first such sequence since the final two games of 2022. They host Washington on Friday, October 16, at 8 p.m. Eastern. Tuesday’s preview lists Ijeboi with nine rushing touchdowns, second in the conference at the time of publication.

The 278-yard difference changes a quarterback’s choices

Purdue’s rushing advantage mattered on both sides of the ball. Productive carries gave Browne more occasions on which the defense had to respect the run. Stopping Minnesota’s carries pushed the opposing offense toward situations with fewer convincing alternatives. The calculated 278-yard difference is not merely a large number; it describes how differently the two quarterbacks could approach their next decisions.

Ijeboi’s workload also makes the supporting execution important. A back does not produce that kind of night independently of the blocking, the quarterback’s recognition and the defense’s reaction to other threats. Purdue should seek the parts that can be repeated against a changed front rather than demand another career performance. An ordinary gain that keeps the next snap flexible can be enough to sustain the value of the run game.

A short week rewards a usable core

Washington’s Friday visit reduces the time between games. That makes a clear, executable plan more useful than a large collection of new answers the players cannot apply consistently. Purdue can preserve its run-game foundation while preparing specific responses to the way Washington aligns against it. Keeping Browne involved as both passer and runner makes that alignment harder to settle.

The defensive test is similarly practical: can the Boilermakers contain the run without creating an easy passing window through excessive commitment? The Minnesota result establishes what happened once, not what will automatically happen again. A Purdue performance built on repeatable blocking and correct defensive responsibilities would offer stronger evidence of a turnaround than simply matching Saturday’s score. Ijeboi’s touchdowns deserve attention. The deeper development is a team whose ground game helps shape both the opportunities it receives and the opportunities it allows.
