Rutgers found two 100-yard runners and still lost control of the game

Antwan Raymond and Clay Thevenin supplied production, but Northwestern’s early lead made the ground game chase rather than dictate.

The evidence

Rutgers lost 42-14 at No. 24 Northwestern even though Antwan Raymond rushed for a season-high 150 yards and Clay Thevenin added 116. The Scarlet Knights fell to 2-5 and 1-3 in the Big Ten, while their streak against ranked opponents reached 46 consecutive losses. The contrast between rushing production and scoreboard control explains the afternoon.

Northwestern’s fast start forced Rutgers to run while chasing rather than run to dictate. The backs gained yards, but the offense could not convert enough of those gains into touchdowns before Aidan Chiles expanded the margin. Rushing efficiency loses some strategic value when the opponent already owns the pace and can keep the safeties patient.

What the film is asking

Rutgers should preserve the two-back threat while changing how it presents. Raymond and Thevenin can share the backfield, motion to the slot or alternate by situation, making the defense identify personnel rather than assume the same run direction. The objective is to create conflict for a linebacker before the handoff, not simply add another carry after the score has moved.

The defense has to make that offensive identity usable. A first-quarter stop allows the backs to remain central into the second half. Against Northwestern, Rutgers gave up too much too quickly and made every later possession feel compressed. Better tackling on the quarterback and a clearer edge assignment are prerequisites for the run game to matter on its preferred terms.

What comes next

Michigan visits next with its own young quarterback questions. Rutgers can make that game uncomfortable by shortening it, protecting the football and forcing Michigan to finish long drives. The plan becomes fragile if the Scarlet Knights give up another immediate two-score lead, so the opening defensive series carries unusual importance.

Two 100-yard rushers are not empty statistics; they are evidence of a workable foundation. But a foundation must support the rest of the team. Rutgers needs the run to create manageable third downs, reduce defensive exposure and preserve a neutral scoreboard. If those connections appear, Raymond and Thevenin can become the reason the game stays close instead of the footnote to another ranked loss.
