The fresh evidence

Rutgers receiver KJ Duff entered the Northwestern game leading the nation with 13 contested catches, according to Pro Football Focus data cited by Rutgers. He also earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after a two-touchdown performance in the win at Maryland.

Duff’s value is easy to measure on completed passes, but the more important effect may be where Northwestern places its help. A safety leaning outside can soften a run fit, delay a pressure or create the interior access Rutgers needs on third down.

What it changes

Rutgers should not confuse trust with repetition. Throwing every challenge ball to Duff would allow Northwestern to bracket him and rally elsewhere. The better use is to make his alignment move the coverage, then attack the defender whose assignment changed because of him.

Motion Duff across the formation, use condensed splits to protect his release and pair his vertical route with an underneath option. That combination forces the Wildcats to declare whether the extra defender belongs to Duff or to the middle of the field.

For Rutgers, that distinction turns a reported development into a football decision. The nation’s leading contested-catch target can stretch a defense even when the ball is not thrown his way. The coaching value comes from deciding where the new leverage belongs: which player can simplify his assignment, which defender must now receive help and which down can be called more aggressively. A sound plan does not merely celebrate the strength described above. It uses that strength to make the next assignment clearer for the other ten players, then preserves an answer when the opponent adjusts.

The Saturday test

Northwestern’s disciplined defense will welcome low-percentage throws if the pass rush can affect the launch point. Rutgers must give its quarterback a firm pocket and avoid turning a matchup advantage into a series of hopeful fades.

Notice the first third down when Duff aligns away from the boundary. If the safety widens before the snap, Rutgers should have an answer inside. Converting that answer would show the offense is benefiting from Duff before he records another catch.
