Abasiri’s USC value cannot be confined to the sack column

A Lott Trophy quarterfinalist’s job changes across the defensive line. The Trojans need those assignments to work together after their bye.

Recognition for a job with several addresses

Jide Abasiri has one sack this season. He also has sixteen tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries, and USC’s official account describes a defender who plays multiple positions along the line and attracts extra attention. The sack total is one part of the job, not its complete description.

Abasiri was named a Lott IMPACT Trophy quarterfinalist on October 15. That is a stage in an award process, not a trophy already won. With USC idle October 17, it offers a useful opportunity to examine the work that can disappear when the only question asked of a defensive lineman is how often he reached the quarterback.

Changing positions changes the neighboring job

A lineman moving between spots does not carry an identical assignment to each one. The angle of the block changes, the space that must be defended changes, and the teammate relying on his leverage may change. Versatility is useful only when those responsibilities remain clear across the front.

Abasiri’s background gives the Trojans more than a new experiment. He appeared in all thirteen games in 2025, starting nine, and finished that season with 26 tackles and 3.5 sacks. The current junior is also a captain and represented USC at Big Ten Media Days. Those roles do not prove the outcome of the next snap, but they identify a player being asked to connect the group as well as contribute individually.

The bye does not erase the next assignment

USC stands 6–1 overall and 3–1 in the Big Ten, with Wisconsin next on October 24. A useful return from the break would be a defensive front that can change its arrangement without making its own responsibilities uncertain.

Abasiri should be evaluated on more than whether the next quarterback appears in his tackle line. Forcing a blocker to stay occupied can matter if another defender finishes; holding the correct space can matter before any pass is attempted. The award recognition highlights an individual. USC’s next task is making his different jobs strengthen the same defense.
