USC has kept drives alive at uncommon rates
No. 16 USC enters the Wisconsin game 6–1 and 3–1 in the Big Ten after an open week. The Trojans have converted 51.2 percent of third downs and 75 percent of fourth downs while completing 68.6 percent of their passes. They have also scored on 12 of 13 red-zone possessions over the last three games.
Those scores were not all touchdowns, an important distinction when evaluating efficiency. USC’s strength is extending possessions until points remain available, not skipping every difficult down. Jayden Maiava and the offense have generated 177 first downs, the accumulation that makes a red-zone trip possible before the finishing call is even selected.
Wisconsin can make a good rate feel smaller
The Badgers are 4–2 after losing 17–7 at UCLA, where they held a rushing attack that entered averaging 253.2 yards to 120. Marvin Burks Jr. intercepted two passes. Wisconsin’s ability to reduce easy ground gains can put USC’s conversion numbers under direct pressure by making third down longer and more predictable.
USC should not respond by treating every series as four-down football from the first snap. The Trojans’ conversion rate is valuable because it creates choice, not obligation. A third-and-manageable call can preserve a fourth-down option; a reckless early throw or loss in the backfield can remove it before Lincoln Riley has a decision to make.
The first Camp Randall trip since 1965
USC has not visited Camp Randall since 1965. The setting and evening kickoff will make communication part of the conversion equation. Protection checks, route adjustments and the snap itself must survive noise before the offense can ask its playmakers to win. A delay or false start changes the same third-down rate without Wisconsin making a tackle.
The Trojans’ strongest plan is to treat money downs as the result of earlier precision. Gain enough on first down, stay out of penalties and let the full playbook remain available. If USC does that, its percentages can express a real identity. If not, Wisconsin can turn an impressive rate into a series of desperate, expensive yards.
