Trey Cooley’s burst gave Washington room to finish

The Huskies’ lead had shrunk to five points. A 53-yard touchdown and two late interceptions secured a win their own turnovers had kept in danger.

Five points was not enough separation

Purdue had cut Washington’s lead to 31–26 when Trey Cooley supplied the distance the Huskies needed. His 53-yard touchdown run with 10:30 remaining in the fourth quarter made the next Purdue response harder to complete. Washington eventually won 38–26 on October 16.

Cooley finished with 113 yards on eight carries. The result also required the defense to finish: Jeron Jones intercepted a pass with 7:07 left, and Rylon Dillard-Allen intercepted Purdue’s final possession. The long run created breathing room. The takeaways made sure the opponent could not spend the rest of the quarter removing it.

Brown’s production came with a warning

Elijah Brown completed 21 of 27 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions. Both parts belong in the evaluation of Washington’s offensive night. The passing game produced enough damage to help win without operating cleanly enough to make the result comfortable.

Lawson caught six passes for 103 yards, and Roebuck added five for 97, including a four-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Brian Bonner contributed a one-yard rushing touchdown shortly before halftime and a twenty-five-yard receiving score. Washington had several ways to reach the end zone. Its lost possessions kept giving Purdue another chance to answer those scores.

The finish joined two working parts

The Huskies gained 488 yards, split between 302 passing and 186 rushing, while allowing Purdue 371. They improved to 4–3 overall and 1–3 in the Big Ten. The next game is against Nebraska on October 31 after an open week.

The useful lesson is not that Cooley can be asked to produce a fifty-yard answer whenever the margin shrinks. It is that Washington finally paired an important offensive score with defensive possessions that preserved it. Brown’s accuracy and touchdown production offer real material to build on; the interceptions identify work that cannot be hidden by the win. Cooley’s burst helped turn Friday’s balance of opportunity back toward the Huskies. The defense’s late catches completed the job before the offense had to rescue it again.

October 20 correction: Lawson’s receiving total

Washington’s final official box score credits Chris Lawson with six receptions for 103 yards, not the eight catches stated in the initial recap used for this article. The receiving paragraph has been corrected; the original publication date and URL are unchanged.
