The evidence

Wisconsin beat No. 16 USC 24-7 for its first regular-season victory over the Trojans and highest-ranked win since defeating No. 15 Nebraska in 2021. The Badgers improved to 5-2 and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Their defense limited USC to one touchdown, while the offense repeatedly converted long possessions into a growing second-half margin.

Bryan Jackson finished a 13-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run before halftime. Colton Joseph then completed a 10-play, 75-yard march with a 16-yard scoring pass to Chris Brooks Jr. Wisconsin closed with another 13-play drive, covering 59 yards before Ryan Schwendeman’s one-yard touchdown made the lead unreachable.

What the film is asking

Those drives shared a valuable trait: the Badgers did not need an explosive play to survive. Every manageable third down increased USC’s fatigue and reduced the number of possessions available to the Trojans. By the fourth quarter, Wisconsin could call the run because the scoreboard and the defense had already made patience an aggressive choice.

Joseph’s touchdown pass mattered because it punished the defense for committing to the drive’s physical rhythm. Once the linebackers stepped toward the run, Brooks gained space behind them. Wisconsin should preserve that relationship rather than separating its passing game into obvious situations where the rush can ignore every other threat.

What comes next

The defense made the offense’s patience possible. Holding USC to seven meant a punt was not a crisis and a four-yard run remained useful. Complementary football appeared in the possession count: the offense kept the defense rested, and the defense ensured the offense never had to abandon the plan.

Wisconsin now has three consecutive home wins over ranked opponents, a pattern that speaks to more than atmosphere. The Badgers can make a talented visitor execute for four quarters without receiving extra possessions. Their next task is carrying the method away from Camp Randall: protect the ball, stack ordinary gains and make the opponent feel every snap of a drive before the touchdown arrives.
