A road win with a rushing foundation

Boise State won 38–31 at Fresno State on October 10. The Broncos’ rankings update lists 512 total yards, including 274 rushing, and credits Dylan Riley with 150 yards on the ground. Boise State enters its open week at 5–1 overall and 2–0 in Pac-12 play.

The school lists Washington State on October 24 as the next opponent. The break gives the Broncos time to examine a result that was productive offensively but still required winning a one-score game. Both parts belong in the review.

A run game can control more than the total

Rushing production helps most when it gives an offense a range of usable situations. A productive first-down run can let the quarterback work from a less predictable second down. A run that converts a late series can remove an opponent’s opportunity to answer. Those gains affect decisions as well as yardage.

Our view is that Boise State should keep that range in mind during the break. Repeating a large rushing total is not the only evidence of success. Maintaining an offense that can use the ground threat to create a clearer passing answer would be equally valuable against a defense that prepares to crowd the run.

Use the break to examine the whole margin

A seven-point win makes the finish easy to remember, but the open week allows a more detailed evaluation. Which defensive possessions made an additional score necessary? Which offensive drives left an opportunity incomplete? Those questions help separate a sound approach from situations that still need a better answer.

We would watch the Broncos’ restart for manageable downs, protection of field position and a defensive response that gives the offense room to keep using its preferred options. The goal should not be to remove all tension from football. It should be to reduce avoidable situations that turn an otherwise productive game into an emergency at the end. Fresno State supplies a strong baseline for the offense. The open week is a chance to make the rest of the performance fit that baseline more consistently.
