Fresno State’s red-zone certainty needs more possessions around it

The Bulldogs scored on every trip against San Diego State, but the bye must create more ways to reach that space.

What changed Saturday

Fresno State spent Saturday off after a 26-23 loss at San Diego State decided by Cooper DiLeva’s 53-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs had erased a 13-point deficit and scored on all three red-zone trips. That finishing rate is useful evidence before Oregon State visits on October 31; the larger problem was generating enough trips.

Bryson Donelson ran for 62 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Julius Gillick scored twice. Fresno State knew how to finish once the field compressed, because the backs could attack a defined gap without asking the passing game to solve every inch. The open week should preserve that certainty while building more efficient movement between the 20s.

The decision underneath it

The first repair is early-down variety. A short throw attached to a run call can punish an overloaded box, while a motion can reveal whether Oregon State is tracking in man or passing receivers through a zone. Fresno State does not need a catalogue of new plays. It needs familiar plays to begin from enough looks that the defense cannot arrive first.

Possession efficiency also protects the defense from another final drive. San Diego State needed 10 plays to set up the winning kick. One additional Fresno State first down earlier in the quarter might have changed the clock, field position or number of possessions available. Offensive control is part of late-game defense even when the unit is not on the field.

What carries forward

The Bulldogs are 4-3 and 1-2 in Pac-12 play after consecutive three-point and seven-point losses. That margin warns against wholesale change. Fresno State has been competitive enough to reach the decisive sequence and must become cleaner enough to control which team receives it.

Against Oregon State, the red zone can remain the point of confidence. The week’s work belongs on the approach: fewer wasted first downs, a clearer answer to pressure and more opportunities for Donelson and Gillick to finish. Fresno State already knows it can score when the field gets short. The next step is making that field appear more often.
