Two touchdowns stretched opposite parts of the field
Jesse Legree caught eight passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns in Oregon State’s 48–30 win over Washington State. The first score covered 90 yards; the second came from five. That combination helped him earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the seventh consecutive time and extended his streak of 100-yard games to seven.
Legree now has 1,040 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, according to Oregon State’s award release. The totals are remarkable, but the two scoring distances explain the problem more clearly. A defender cannot simply protect against the vertical route and assume the compressed field will remove Legree’s usefulness. His role survives both spaces.
Fresno State must choose where the help lives
The Beavers are 5–2 and 3–0 in Pac-12 play entering their trip to Fresno State. A defense can place a safety over Legree to reduce the deep ball, but that decision lightens another area for A.J. Newberry and the run game. It can challenge him with tighter coverage, but then a missed jam can become another long chase.
Oregon State should not force the ball simply because the matchup demands attention. Legree’s greatest value may be the defender he moves before the snap. If Fresno shades help toward him, the quarterback can work the space that adjustment leaves. When the coverage stays balanced, Legree’s established production justifies testing the one-on-one opportunity.
A streak becomes strategy through patience
Seven straight 100-yard games can create pressure to preserve the number. The Beavers need no such target. Their objective is to use the full consequence of Legree’s presence, including possessions in which he draws coverage and someone else advances the ball. The streak is evidence of an advantage, not a play-calling quota.
The 90-yard touchdown shows the maximum punishment for losing the deep field. The five-yard score shows that backing away does not end the problem. If Oregon State keeps both threats connected and protects the football, Fresno State must spend resources on Legree at every depth. That price can make the entire offense easier to operate.
