San Diego State needs the tackle before the recovery chase

Hala and Letuli lead the Pac-12 in tackles. Against a Fresno State offense that rarely gives the ball away, the location of those stops matters.

The totals identify the workload

Hala has 61 tackles and Letuli has 49, placing San Diego State’s defenders first and second in the Pac-12 in the Aztecs’ October 12 notes. They are repeatedly reaching the ball. Saturday’s Fresno State game asks a more specific question: how much distance has the offense gained before they arrive?

San Diego State has used 34 different starters through six games, including fourteen on defense. Malachi Finau is the unit’s lone returning starter. The changing personnel makes a dependable fit and a clear coverage handoff valuable even when neither produces a conspicuous individual statistic.

Do not wait for the quarterback to donate a possession

Fresno State’s Jayden Mandal has thrown 155 consecutive passes without an interception. The Bulldogs have committed three turnovers as a team while producing eleven takeaways. San Diego State cannot assume that an opponent allowed to extend a drive will eventually supply a simple escape.

The linebackers’ involvement needs to begin with leverage and recognition. A completion stopped promptly can leave a difficult next down. A runner forced back toward help can make a teammate’s tackle easier. Those are ways to improve the defense without requiring Hala or Letuli to produce a takeaway on every important series. A high tackle total can reflect excellent work, but it can also include repeated repairs after the offense has already reached productive space.

Make the ordinary stop valuable

The Aztecs, 2–4 overall and 1–1 in the Pac-12, host Fresno State, 4–2 and 1–1, on October 17 at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network. The Old Oil Can matchup offers a home opportunity, not an advance promise that a rivalry atmosphere will solve the assignments.

The first useful evidence will be where the initial contact happens and how quickly another defender arrives. San Diego State benefits if its leading tacklers can finish plays within the structure rather than repeatedly chase an escaped runner. Hala and Letuli have demonstrated that they will be involved. The next step is making more of that involvement leave Fresno State with another difficult down instead of a fresh set.
