Texas State trusted Jacob Bonilla after building the kick long before the final snap

The evidence

Jacob Bonilla kicked a 37-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining to give Texas State a 20-17 homecoming win over Utah State. The Bobcats improved to 4-3 and 2-1 in Pac-12 play. Bonilla had already made a 51-yarder, so the final attempt was not an isolated gamble; it was the continuation of an operation Texas State had trusted all night.

The game changed through multiple phases. Jaylen Jenkins returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, and Brad Jackson finished a 13-play, 78-yard drive with a three-yard run. Those scores forced Utah State to defend more than one type of possession and allowed the Bobcats to reach the final minutes without asking the offense for a touchdown on every trip.

What the film is asking

Jackson’s long drive is the most transferable element. Thirteen plays require the offense to survive several defensive pictures without a penalty or negative play ending the series. Texas State stayed patient, used the run to preserve down-and-distance and finished close to the goal line after making Utah State tackle repeatedly.

The kickoff return provided the opposite stress: immediate points without an offensive snap. Special-teams touchdowns can distort a game if the offense becomes impatient while waiting for another explosive. Texas State avoided that trap and later returned to the methodical possession that made Bonilla’s final range reachable.

What comes next

The Bobcats travel to Boise State on October 31. The road environment will challenge the placement operation and the communication that supported it. Texas State should make the Broncos drive the long field, protect the ball and treat every hidden special-teams yard as part of the scoring plan rather than an accessory.

A close win becomes useful when a team can identify why it survived. Texas State had an explosive return, a sustained touchdown drive and a kicker who converted from two distances. That diversity created options in the last two minutes. The Bobcats do not need to repeat the exact sequence at Boise; they need all three phases to keep offering one another a viable next decision.
