The recent production has not been a one-catch story
Eli Wood caught twenty passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns over Utah State’s last three games. Through six games, his totals are 36 receptions, 472 yards and five scores. The Aggies’ receiving game has a connection showing up repeatedly, not merely a single memorable gain.
Wood’s seven catches for a career-high 102 yards at Boise State on October 3 are part of that recent work. His addition to the Biletnikoff Award watch list recognizes a productive start; it is a nomination-stage distinction, not an award already won.
Volume is useful when it preserves the next choice
Utah State comes out of its October 17 open date at 2–4 overall and 1–1 in the Pac-12. Texas State is next, on the road October 24. The Bobcats just scored 66 points against Colorado State, making sustained offensive participation especially valuable for the visitors.
Wood’s role can help in a more practical way than demanding a touchdown from every touch. A reception that creates a manageable next down lets the offense keep its running and passing choices connected. Another first down can move field position without requiring the defense to manufacture the starting point. That is the repeatable value in a receiver who keeps appearing across several games.
The defense cannot own both sides of possession
The Aggies enter the matchup allowing 359.7 yards and 23.5 points per game, with a conference-leading 118.9 passing-efficiency defense. Those figures describe a unit that has supplied meaningful resistance despite the losing overall record.
The offense still has its own part to complete. Wood’s receiving totals should become a foundation for that work, not an excuse to narrow every important throw toward him regardless of coverage. Other options become more useful when a defense spends attention on a proven receiver.
A strong performance in San Marcos would not need to reproduce the same seven-catch line from Boise. It would keep the connection available while taking the openings around it. Wood has given opponents a reason to account for him. Utah State’s next task is turning that attention, and his catches, into possessions that remain useful from beginning to end.
