The evidence
Washington State lost 31-10 to Boise State and fell to 1-7, 0-4 in Pac-12 play. The Cougars’ most revealing possession traveled 72 yards in 13 plays, included two fourth-down conversions and ended on downs at the Boise State three. The Broncos then scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to turn resistance into separation.
That empty trip changed more than seven possible points. A touchdown would have rewarded the offense’s patience, given the defense additional margin and forced Boise State to answer from a tighter score. Instead, Washington State spent its best sustained work without altering the scoreboard and then had to defend an opponent playing with greater freedom.
What the film is asking
The goal-line correction should preserve the principles that produced the drive. Wazzu converted fourth-and-2 on a run and fourth-and-5 on a 26-yard pass to Jack Pedersen. Near the end zone, the Cougars need a formation that can still threaten both actions, preventing the defense from crowding a single gap or sitting on the first short route.
The fourth-quarter defense also has to separate disappointment from assignment. An empty offensive possession cannot become permission to lose leverage on the next series. Washington State should simplify the first call after any sudden change: protect the edge, tackle the completion and make the opponent earn a second first down before expanding the pressure package.
What comes next
The Cougars visit San Diego State on October 31. The Aztecs just scored 49 and allowed 56, suggesting both sides will see chances. Washington State must resist turning the matchup into a race from the opening kick. A long drive that ends with points can protect its defense and test whether San Diego State has corrected its own late stops.
A 1-7 record narrows attention toward results, but the Boise State drive provides a process worth keeping. Washington State showed it can convert difficult downs and sustain the ball. The missing piece is the final three yards and the defensive response that follows. Finishing one possession would change how every subsequent snap is played.
