Eshelman found a receiving partner. Washington State needs an earlier start.

Ganashamoorthy’s 147 yards gave a first-time starter a repeated destination. Four opening punts left the partnership chasing too much ground.

The first start contained a real connection

Owen Eshelman completed 32 of 49 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start at Oregon State. Branden Ganashamoorthy caught eleven passes for 147 yards and a score, becoming Washington State’s first hundred-yard receiver this season.

The Cougars lost 48–30 on October 17 after punting on their first four possessions and falling behind 17–0. The passing partnership supplied a way back into the afternoon. It arrived after the offense had already made that return difficult.

The quarterback’s legs added another route forward

Eshelman rushed fifteen times for 136 yards and a touchdown, the second-largest rushing total by a Washington State quarterback. A forty-yard touchdown pass to Ganashamoorthy late in the first half and a twenty-yard fourth-down scoring run late in the fourth showed different ways he could change a possession.

That combination gives a defense more to account for, but the rushing total should not be treated as permission to leave every difficult situation to the quarterback. A receiver repeatedly getting available supplies the complement: the ball can move without Eshelman having to run through another set of defenders himself. The offense benefits when those threats support each other instead of becoming unrelated emergency responses.

The total yardage did not buy a fresh beginning

Washington State gained a season-high 459 yards and ran eighty plays. Daniel Blood caught six passes for 59 yards and his first receiving touchdown. The late production therefore involved more than one receiving destination.

At 1–6 overall and 0–3 in the Pac-12, the Cougars host Boise State on October 24. The next test is whether the connections evident in Corvallis can function before the deficit becomes so large.

Four opening punts are not repaired simply by adding the later yardage to the final sheet. An earlier first down can preserve a possession while the game still offers more choices. Eshelman and Ganashamoorthy showed a relationship worth developing. Washington State needs it helping establish the afternoon, not only explaining why the ending looked more competitive than the beginning.
