Alabama needs an early-down floor before it looks for a ceiling

A usable running game can keep Texas A&M’s pressure from turning another afternoon sideways.

The fresh evidence

Alabama returns to Bryant-Denny Stadium at 5-2 after consecutive losses, and the 26-10 defeat at Tennessee made the offensive problem plain. The Crimson Tide were outgained 347-201 and did not score after halftime. Keelon Russell completed 19 of 29 passes for 147 yards with two interceptions, numbers that left too many possessions dependent on difficult third downs.

Daniel Hill carried seven times for 34 yards while Russell supplied Alabama’s touchdown on a 19-yard run. That is not enough volume to define the offense, but it is enough evidence to build an early-down floor. Texas A&M has allowed 142 rushing yards per game in independent scouting and gave up 247 to Missouri, so Alabama should make the Aggies prove they can fit the run before asking Russell to solve disguised pressure.

The matchup inside the matchup

The point is not to run into crowded boxes. It is to use Hill’s carries, quarterback keepers and quick throws as connected answers. If a safety inserts, Rico Scott’s route can replace him. If the edge crashes, Russell can keep. If A&M stays light, Alabama can hand the ball off again and make the front absorb contact.

A&M’s defense has allowed 17.1 points and 164 passing yards per game according to the current preview. Those figures suggest the Tide will not receive easy explosives simply because it is home. Mike Elko’s delegation of defensive play-calling to Lyle Hemphill adds another layer of disguise, making pre-snap communication and protection identification as important as any individual matchup.

What decides it

Alabama’s defense gave it chances at Tennessee. Caleb Woodson made 11 tackles, Bray Hubbard had 10 and Yhonzae Pierre recorded a sack. The offense must repay that work with possessions that last. Even a drive ending in a punt can help if it flips field position and gives the defense time to recover rather than returning after a turnover.

This is not a referendum on whether Alabama can still create big plays. It is a test of whether the Tide can reach them without skipping the ordinary work. A dependable five-yard run, a quick completion to Marshall Pritchett and a protected second-and-short can restore the entire call sheet. The ceiling becomes relevant only after Alabama rebuilds the floor.
