The defense inherited an immediate problem
A 45-yard interception return gave Charleston Southern the ball at Clemson’s thirty on October 17. The Tigers’ defense responded with consecutive sacks by Burley and Caden Story, ending the threat inside a 37–0 victory.
That sequence is more instructive than treating the shutout as an afternoon without a difficult starting point. Clemson’s offense had made a mistake. The defense did not let that mistake determine the next score, instead changing the opponent’s available distance before the short field could become a straightforward finishing opportunity.
Story supplied the negative plays
Story recorded four tackles, a career-high three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Clemson finished with thirteen tackles for loss and four sacks, holding Charleston Southern to 76 total yards, including 26 rushing and fifty passing. Charleston Southern finished with six first downs.
The Buccaneers converted none of their eleven third downs and neither of their two fourth-down attempts. A negative play does more than subtract from the yardage total: it changes what the next play must achieve. Repeatedly forcing that recalculation made it difficult for Charleston Southern to build a connected possession, even after a favorable exchange had briefly shortened the field.
The next comparison must remain honest
Clemson gained 438 yards, including 231 rushing, and improved to 4–2 overall and 2–1 in the ACC. Nolan Hauser made field goals from 41, 59 and 44 yards; the 59-yarder was the second-longest in school history.
Virginia Tech visits October 24. An FCS shutout does not independently establish how Clemson will perform against another conference opponent. It does provide a concrete response worth carrying forward: a defense that can handle an offense’s error without demanding a perfect starting position of its own. Story’s production matters because it changed the next assignment, not because a large tackle-for-loss count should be expected every week. The short-field stand is a usable example; the next game remains a new examination.
