The passing connection was real
Jordan Allen caught ten of his thirteen targets for 120 yards against Virginia Tech. Alberto Mendoza completed 29 of 38 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns. Georgia Tech still lost 34–24 on October 17, a result that separates offensive efficiency from possession control.
The Yellow Jackets gained 428 yards on 59 plays, averaging 7.3 per snap. Those are not the numbers of an offense unable to move. They are the numbers of an offense whose successful movement kept meeting other expensive events before it could dictate the afternoon.
The comeback needed another finish
Georgia Tech trailed 24–3 at halftime, then scored fourteen points in the first 2:59 of the third quarter. Mendoza completed his first fourteen passes of the second half, finishing that half eighteen-for-twenty for 217 yards. Allen’s availability was part of a passing game that had become difficult to interrupt.
Virginia Tech answered with a 26-yard screen touchdown to restore a fourteen-point lead. A 63-yard punt return later set up a field goal. Those responses changed the task for Georgia Tech even while its quarterback kept finding receivers. A completion streak does not prevent an opponent from gaining territory by another route.
The missing value was at the ends
The Yellow Jackets scored on only two of four red-zone visits, with one touchdown. Their opening possession ended in a fumble out of the back of the end zone, and a 32-yard field-goal attempt missed in the fourth quarter. They converted four of eleven third downs.
At 2–4 overall and 1–2 in the ACC, Georgia Tech has a productive relationship worth preserving in Allen and Mendoza. The next requirement is making that production survive the last few yards and the exchanges around it. Finishing a drive does not make the earlier completions more attractive; it makes them count. Saturday’s passing line established that the offense could repeatedly find space. The result established how little that space protects a team when its scoring opportunities and field position keep ending on the opponent’s terms.
