Jordan Allen gives Georgia Tech a dependable target, not a cure-all

Back-to-back ten-catch games are a program first. The Yellow Jackets still need his reliability to help prevent the early mistakes that buried them at Virginia Tech.

Twenty catches established a new kind of floor

Jordan Allen caught ten passes against Duke and ten more at Virginia Tech, becoming the first Georgia Tech player with double-digit receptions in consecutive games. The second performance accompanied Alberto Mendoza’s career-high 335 passing yards. Together they helped the Yellow Jackets average a season-best 7.3 yards per play and gain 428 yards.

Georgia Tech still lost 34–24 after two first-half turnovers contributed to a 24–3 halftime deficit. That contrast defines Allen’s value accurately. A dependable target can stabilize a possession and give the quarterback a familiar answer. He cannot retrieve a possession after the ball has already been given away.

Reliability should improve the beginning

Boston College visits for homecoming with Georgia Tech 2–4 and needing four wins in its final six games to reach bowl eligibility. The Yellow Jackets cannot approach that math by trying to collect all four victories in one afternoon. They need Allen’s reliability to improve the first quarter, when a simple completion can prevent the game from tilting.

Ten catches do not have to mean ten designed throws. Allen can influence coverage even when the ball travels elsewhere. Motion, alignment and route spacing can make a defender declare his plan, giving Mendoza a cleaner read. The useful outcome is not preserving a personal streak. It is producing fewer desperate downs for the entire offense.

The other side supplied a useful clue

Georgia Tech’s defense made five sacks at Virginia Tech, nearly matching its six from the previous games combined. That improvement can support Allen and the offense if it creates shorter fields or quicker returns of possession. It becomes less valuable when turnovers force the defense back onto the field before it has recovered.

Allen has shown Georgia Tech where a steady down can begin. Homecoming is the chance to connect that steadiness to ball security, protection and field position. The Yellow Jackets do not need him to solve the season alone. They need his catches to become part of possessions that start cleanly enough for the rest of the team to matter.
