The last opportunity belonged to the same back
Davion McGill lost a fumble inside Duke’s ten-yard line in the third quarter. With North Carolina trailing late, he was still part of the answer. Three carries gained 44 yards on the decisive possession, including the 24-yard touchdown with 1:53 remaining that gave the Tar Heels a 24–20 victory on October 17.
That eight-play, 78-yard drive rescued an afternoon that had threatened to become a story about a vanished lead. Carolina had been ahead 17–0, then spent more than 41 minutes without scoring. Duke took a 20–17 advantage with 4:39 left.
Trust still needed a usable plan
McGill finished with 75 yards on twelve carries. Demon June added 49 on thirteen, including a four-yard touchdown on fourth-and-two. The running options remained relevant even after the lead had disappeared.
Billy Edwards Jr. completed fifteen of twenty-five passes for 191 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. Jordan Shipp supplied seven catches for 75 yards and a score. Carolina’s final march did not have to become a declaration that every snap would be a desperate throw.
Redemption needed a defensive finish
Kenton Dopson III intercepted Duke at the Carolina fifteen with fourteen seconds left, securing the win. The Tar Heels allowed 373 total yards but limited Duke to a season-low 124 rushing yards. They finished with fewer total yards themselves, 326, yet collected 22 first downs to Duke’s nineteen.
The revealing decision was continuing to involve McGill after the earlier mistake. That did not erase the fumble or make ball security unimportant. It prevented one lost possession from removing a useful option when Carolina needed a complete drive. A back can be accountable for a turnover and remain the best available choice on a later down. Saturday demonstrated the distinction in a rivalry game, not a practice explanation. At 4–2 overall and 2–1 in the ACC, the Tar Heels leave with both a warning about protecting a lead and evidence that their offense can rebuild one under pressure.
