The evidence
Pittsburgh lost 52-23 at No. 1 Miami and fell to 5-3 overall, 2-3 in the ACC, with a third consecutive defeat. Yet Cataurus Hicks produced five catches for 149 yards and a touchdown, a concentrated reminder that the Panthers still possess a vertical answer even when the game’s broader structure is breaking around them.
Hicks’ production mattered because Miami could not simply squeeze every route toward the line. He threatened the space behind the corner, forced safety attention and created yardage that did not require Pitt to execute a 12-play drive against the nation’s top-ranked team. The issue was turning those flashes into enough possessions to keep the score from accelerating.
What the film is asking
Pitt should use Hicks to create space before targeting him. Motioning him through the formation can reveal the coverage and widen the safety, even if the ball goes to a back underneath. A vertical receiver changes the defense most consistently when his route makes other completions easier, not only when the quarterback launches another contested throw.
The Panthers also need an early-down run and protection plan that lets the deep concept develop. If the quarterback reaches the top of the drop under immediate pressure, Hicks’ speed becomes theoretical. Chip help, a moving pocket or a play-action look can buy the extra half-second without removing the receiver from the route entirely.
What comes next
Miami of Ohio visits on October 31, giving Pitt a nonconference game before the final ACC stretch. The opponent changes, but the need does not: rebuild a possession that begins with an ordinary gain and ends with a deliberate shot. The Panthers cannot ask one explosive receiver to erase the field position and defensive problems behind every loss.
A three-game slide invites broad conclusions. Hicks offers a narrower and more useful one. Pitt can still make a defense protect the whole field; it must connect that threat to better down-and-distance and more stable protection. If the Panthers do, the 149-yard performance becomes a foundation for the response rather than a bright line inside a 29-point defeat.
