Carrera’s story does not need to be inflated into a promise about Saturday’s result. Its football value is more practical: a roster depends on players who prepare the starting group, learn multiple jobs and remain ready through weeks when their names are not part of the game plan.
What it changes
That depth matters during the back half of a season. Every defense accumulates small availability problems, and the scout team must reproduce increasingly specific opponents on a short clock. A player who understands preparation as a daily obligation raises the quality of those repetitions.
SMU should preserve that developmental habit by giving reserve defenders clear, measurable roles rather than vague instructions to stay ready. Special teams, dime packages and opponent-specific practice responsibilities can turn patience into genuine depth.
For SMU, that distinction turns a reported development into a football decision. A law student’s long route back to football is also a reminder that roster value is built far from the spotlight. The coaching value comes from deciding where the new leverage belongs: which player can simplify his assignment, which defender must now receive help and which down can be called more aggressively. A sound plan does not merely celebrate the strength described above. It uses that strength to make the next assignment clearer for the other ten players, then preserves an answer when the opponent adjusts.

The wrong lesson would be to romanticize endurance while ignoring workload. Balancing law school and football requires honest communication, and a healthy program makes demanding standards possible through structure rather than through avoidable chaos.
Carrera’s impact may appear in snaps that never reach the box score: a starter recognizing a route he saw in practice, a coverage unit holding its lane or a reserve entering without a communication error. Those are the dividends of a roster that develops everyone.
